Jim,
Thanks for the great trails!! Made it thru Armstrong Creek Today!! Trails were great even late in the day!! 300 miles in the last 2 days You guys Rock!!!
You are absolutely correct about that. And that's the very reason I make sure I groom the trail spur into Fence EVERY TIME I go out. Whether it really needs it or not. A couple of years ago while I was Gudowicz's fueling up, a group of sleds pulled in. One of the guys in the group came up and asked me who groomed that Fence Spur. I said I did. He said that was the best trail he ever rode and thanked me. He also asked me if I taught groomer school. And he's the reason I groom that every time. That spur doesn't get a lot of traffic early in the week, sometimes you could probably get away with not grooming it... but not me. I make sure that I have that section in the best condition possible, just in case the fellow happens to be coming along.
We haven't taken the trail to Fence in many years, I may have to give it another try ...just recall that route being alot of road riding years ago, and it was a warm day...if you know what I mean.

That's one of the reasons why we groom that for Florence County. We groom from that intersection (which has no assigned INT number oddly) on the Goodman Grade where it splits to Newald one way, and Fence the other. But we only groom up to Rock Creek Rd. And from there, it is basically a road route into and through Fence, with some tricky shoulders to negotiate. But that's why we groom it for Florence County. Otherwise they'd have to use that same road route, and drive all the way to Rock Creek Rd. It's just easier for us. And that's just another reason I like to make sure that section is in pristine shape. After having to endure that road route, which can be bad at times, it's nice to be able to offer the rider something nice.
Welcome to the 100 Miler! :hi:
That is one route I do try to avoid, especially on warm days. But sometimes you might be coming from Lake Hilbert Campground or the Restaurant, and really have no other choice.
The only road riding in fence now is between rock creek road and the fence post the trail was re routed to the ditch line of hwy 101.
Thanks Paul. I was going to mention that I thought I'd heard something about part of that trail being rerouted, but wasn't sure, and the message was already long enough. But that's still a good ways. Do you know how far that is? Just wondering. If I had time, I could look/figure it out. But I'm still working on reconfiguring my sonicwall.
Thanks for the info.....I actually like riding the ditchlines on the wider R.O.W,'s. of a state highway.
We will check it out next time we can...we end up in central and eastern Florence co. at times and would normally head west to the grade instead of south through Florence to avoid the 'Fence" route,
which is too bad, because there are some awesome trails in Floco.that get missed that way.
friday we rode laona, long lake , fence, armstrong goodman and back. other than the logging section north of fence it was wonderful, if there had been an inch or 2 of loose to cool things it would have been better. the reroutes around fenceare good and the road running south of town is ok but I wouldnt want to doo it on a warm sunny day. Thanks to all the groomers everything we ran was great all weekend and the grade from wabeno to laona got better friday to sat night.
It took us 4 years to get the route north and east of Fence to be moved off of the plowed roads and along the highway right of way. The final section was approved December 1st by the D.O.T. It will need some dozer work next year to make it a great trail that is easy to groom. So the only "road" riding left is from the Fence Post to the 100 miler spur. I think it is 2.5 miles. There are a lot of areas that you can run the edges of fields or in the ditchline. Like I tell everyone that stops at the Fence Post. If you are in a hurry, you won't like the 2-1/2 miles. I have been working with some farmers and other landowners to try and find an alternate route around some of the "bad" areas. It may take another 4 years. We bought the Fence post in 2008 and even before i owned it I was working on making this a better trail. Everything takes time!!
