"environmental conditions"
Sorry for starting the rehash thread of the opening and closing rules and regulations. It wasn't my intent nor is it the insight I was looking for.

What I meant to ask is what are the observations of the "environmental conditions" rather than the "Legal" hurdles. The Legal we are stuck with either way, every year. The variable in "when do we get to ride" is the environmental conditions, which we can't see from 100+ miles away.

When the trails are legal to open, do we have enough snow on the ground to groom?
Is there a ice layer with the past freeze/thaw weather?
Are the swamps froze up?
How much ice is on the lakes?

Thanks.....
Query #1: there is 8" to 14" of snow currently on the ground, varies by where you are locatede in the trail system.
#2: no
#3: no
#4: Some fisherman observed on local lakes with ATVs, that usually is an indicator of 4" to 6' of ice or stupidity!

Saturday is our annual brushing day, there will hopefully be 50 plus active club members out with sleds, ATVs and 4X4s doing there best to resolve these and other challanges.
Goal is to get trails cleared, snow base and swamps packed down to generate freez up so the groomers can get out!
Any and all riders are encouraged to join us (more sleds the better)!
Hope to see you there!
At the county snowmobile council meeting yesterday afternoon, the consensus was to shoot for Friday Dec 19th to open Forest County trails. USForest Service gates can't be opened until after the musket season, Dec 11 th earliest. Then we have to groom those trails. Not good to groom a trail and then close a gate. Then the opening date has to published in the Offical public notice paper, forest republican, which is only published once a week. It comes out on a Thursday . Hence, Dec 19th. This the last time I explain this for 2014!
they must be getting lazy at the republican..it used to come out on wednesday...i prefer the pioneer express my self:eek:

Seems like an ancient practice to have to publish the trail opening in a once a week newspaper when even us older coots are hooked up.
Who does the newspaper notice serve nowadays? If you say land owners I am sure they have been notified before some newspaper article comes out.
Our trails span 2 counties and we aren't required to publish the trail openings in a newspaper, so why does Forest County have to?

This newspaper notice is a Forest County rule only ....how did it come about?

And if I have to wait til I see a trails open notice in a newspaper before riding, can I also keep riding til I see a trails closed notice in that same once a week publication?

No I can't because I will be told I had other means of finding out.
Sorry for using logic in a non logical situation.

This silly sport a snowmobiling is sporratic and way too short a season to have even a few oportunities taken away from both enthusiast AND business that it supports.
Unfortunately, for the locals, I will be spending snowmobile cash north of the border this week rather than supporting businesses here in my home state. The snow is here ...NOW....who knows where it will be in 12 days....muzzle loader season doesen't support local business like sledders do.
Time to get a grip Wisconsin.....like the DOT rhyme sings out in the public service spots on radio...."Snow,...slow,....I say the state tourism division needs a spot singing,....Snow....GO!

It Does Not Compute
