I heard a rumor swirling around that the railroad wants to pull out front the outskirts of goodman to argonne/crandon area. Something about to much money to fix a bridge and tressel and low volume of cars going beyond goodman. If so they said something about how many hundreds of thousands of dollars in rail would be scraped with the high price of scrap metal.. Again this is one of them millions of rumors you hear up here so who knows

This would be a super nice trail from crandon to the goodman area then you would have to hookup with the atv year round  dun-good trail system that sees snowmbiles as a riddance  to the year round atvs Nothing beats the 100 Miler thats for sure

Anyone else (jim, johny, roger) here rumors on the pullout?

Now that you mention it, I think I heard something about that, at a meeting a couple of months ago. But that was it. I haven't heard anything else yet. I know there doesn't seem to be too much rail traffic on there. Seems like the Goodman Mill is still using it to bring logs in. I've got a buddy I know that works over there, I could try asking him if he's heard anything. But you're right... that could be a great corridor!

Usually at this time of the year, there are long trains of ore cars going through Cavour on this rail line. This year, none!!! Is that a sign of things to come?? I don't know.

A little off topic...but have there been any discussion about the abandoned railroad corridor between Crandon and Lily (and even further south)? The rails have already been pulled and I know some people (certainly not me, wink) have been snowmobiling on parts of it already.

Johnnie,

I believe the ore contract was lost for this year. They either didnt want the contract or underbid on it i heard.. But if we dont see them ore cars rolling before tax season next year. I think the end is definately near. But i guess crandon gets 3 tankers of propane a week and that has to cost them 5-7k a car..

I suppose you have to jump through a million loop holes to get a old railroad grade up and running as a trail?? But maybe someday we will have a new cruising trail

Not to hijack the post, but how about the NST continuing from laona north to hook up with the grade north of Co. Hy."O". is that rumor getting any traction?
That would be a hiway to da U.P., and back.

Last I hard it was set to happening within 5 years and then the propane company in crandon was purchases by a larger company and the railroad didn't want to loose their business. Within the last couple weeks I've also heard that the propane company is moving to tomahawk. who knows these are just rumors as far as i know.

The rail from Laona north to the Argonne- Goodman rail is going to be salvaged this spring. When the salvage is done and the land is sold back to State of WI, then the process of using this last section of the NST will become a reality. WIll this be done next year or in 4 years, only time will tell. I feel once the land buyback is final, the process will be quite rapid. This would finish the NST system.

As a sidebar, Is the Laona line being salvaged because of what may be happening to the east west Argonne-Goodman line?????? I don't know, but a good question.

grade North

Johnnie, will they connect up the NST to the current end of the grade at Hwy O or just go up to Hwy G (by the Argonne/Goodman rail)? I assume it will connect the South NST to the North NST. Who will assume responsibilty for this new trail, the 100 miler or LMT? Once done, I think you will be able to ride from Pulaski to the UP by sled or ATV???
