Last night there was segment on the news about an upcoming snowmobile trail map for the whole forest. It is not here yet, but the U.S. Forest Service is working on it.

Great news....will it point out where this "Christmas Tree" spot is....the only one I know of is on the lake in front of your place....LOL

2x.... I know it's closed now but where was this "Christmas Tree bar" It gets referenced a fair amount and many of us have no idea where it was.

Forest Service Map
Read some additional information regarding the forest Service map, and the USFS thinks it advantageous to produce a map showing the "800 miles" of snowmobile trails throughout the forests. Apparently there is a map they publish showing all vehicle routes / forest service roads, so this will be similar to that. Really sounds like it will be nothing more than another map highlighting the current trails located throughout the forests. No timetable given, and could take as long as a year. Again, just what I read on a few sites, and Johnnie may have more info.
As for the Christmas Tree bar, one of many prior places in Forest County that provided some fun and a break on the way to Armstrong Creek, back in the day........................

sounds like the old " 250 Marathon " map , I still have one , came in handy for boondocking before the F S started putting up gates everywhere .

Just so I have it clear in my head, we can't ride [U]any[/U] of the un-plowed fire roads in the national forest correct? or am I missing something???

It is my understanding unplowed forest roads and unplowed town roads are legal to ride on. (When I say unplowed I mean unplowed all winter, not just after the last snow. 
I think the official definition is not maintained.) In general ditches are also legal to ride in.
Snowmobile trails are only legal to ride on when the trails are officially open. Ditches and unplowed roads can be ridden anytime even if there is a trail there.
So if you can find an unplowed town road you can ride on it all you want. Most paper companies open up their forests to recreational use as well. However just be careful riding through the woods. What once may have been paper company land very well now be private property. I know a lot of the land around my place has been sold off and is no longer owned by the paper company.
I know of at least one example where the new owner put up a "no trespassing" and then shortly thereafter see boondocker snowmobile tracks go right around the sign. That doesn't make for a good impression of snowmobilers. (Or ATVs in summer.)
