ATV's
ATV's
Actually, there are snowmobile trails in FOrest Co. which are open to ATV use. They are the Nicolet Trails which is the rail bed between Laona and Carter and the rail bed between Co. O and the county line north of Popple River. These rail grades are the ONLY SNOWMO trails which are open to ATV use in Forest Co. Any ATV use on other trails will only hurt future trails, and could threaten the use of ATV's on the Nicolet Trail. Johnnie

Just a question! What does everyone think about Atv's on the trails.
I know I watch all the atv's running on the Dungood trails and I always just shrug. I wont ride over there for the life of my anymore. Seems the Atv's are always out in temps above 32 and they do a number on the trails. Just this weekend I watched a bunch of riders playing on the trails. The temps where above 32 for sure with all this rain. Sure not helping them build a base at all. I cant see going to ride trails where the atv's have them rutted up or more.
I see it like this, us snowmobilers get a good 2 months to ride if that some times. We go all spring, summer, and fall with out riding. You cant tell me a person with an atv can't sit for a month or two.

Same here. Nothing personal. But I don't ride over there (Dunbar) either because IMO the trails are too rough from the ATVs. So, I stay on the 100 Mile Snow Safari. But some people don't feel like that. I talked to one guy that feels he can ride any trail, including our 100 Mile Snow Safari, because he's paid his ATV registration and he feels that entitles him to the right to ride any state funded trail. I prefer to follow the law, whatever it may be.
On a related note, I rode South yesterday with my daughter for a trail inspection. The first thing I noticed, is that people have been riding our trails back there with ATVs and trucks. The second thing I noticed, is that they didn't bother to brush anything while they were on our trail either. More brushing is required due to the recent heavy snow/ice fall. At least they could of did a little brushing while they were on our trail!

Florence County has an ordinance about ATV's and 4x4's on groomed trails. Problem right now is the snowmobile trails have not been groomed so the ordinance has not go into effect. For ATV's the ordinance is: no ATV's on ANY groomed trails when the temperature is at or above 28 degrees. Also no ATV's on any trails not opened for ATV use. For 4x4's the ordinance is: No motor vehicle traffic on ANY groomed trails. These ordinances are in effect from Dec 1st until March 31st. (when the trails are opened). You will be seeing more signage in the county with these ordinances on them.

A.t.v.s.
Can A.T.V.s use those sections of trail in winter along with sleds,
or are those summer use only?
I have rode trails in Shawano and Marinette countys that were multi use,
and it wasnt much fun going in and out A.T.V. tire ruts.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!!![/quote]The trails in Marinette (at least by Dunbar) are multi-use trails. And I thought they had a policy similar to the one Hooter outlined for Florence County. No ATVs on groomed trails when the temperature is above 28. At least I think that's the way it was a couple of years ago when I rode over there. I usually don't ride over there any more, so I can't say for sure. But I don't like riding in the ruts either.

Besides being in 3 snowmobile clubs, I also belong to the Florence County ATV club as well as the Dun-Good club. However I don't have time to be active at all in those clubs. The way I see it is that ATVs are starting to out number snowmobiles, according to the registration reports, and they are going to want more and more trails open. The businesses see a potential for more $$$$, so they are happy to see ATVs all year long. Although I believe Marinette County does have a similar ordinance, as far as I know there is no signage nor any one enforcing the ordinance. We are going to make an effort in Florence County to educate and enforce. I personally see no fun in riding my ATV in the winter, but I do understand some people do. The ATVs need to use common sense and ride only when and where they are supposed to. That being said, I do wish there was a way to ban them completely from the trails from Jan 1st to March 31st, then we would not have these conflicts. Bottom line is both groups need to work together to keep the trails we have open and to add more trails in the future. We need to concentrate our fight against the anti-motorized people instead of each other.
