I agree. Riding ATVs can be a lot of fun and it used to be one of things that I looked forward to in the summer, when we came up to visit (before we moved here). And there is no doubt that the local merchants could use the increased business too. I like the idea of having the trails opened to snowmobiles only from Jan 1 - March 31st too. We can definitely go a lot further if we work together on this issue.

I also am an ATV owner, have been for 20 years, and think they are alot
of fun. I know they out number snowmobiles in reg. in WIS.
I dont want to stir up a hornets nest with should they or should they
not be allowed on the snow-mo trails.
After reading the opening letter to this thread, It made me wonder
if ATVs are going to be able to run the NICOLET trail ( R.R. grade)
with snowmobiles this winter.
I saw a couple on SAT. while clearing a little brush on the Townsend trail close to my house, and they kept on going south a couple miles
on the 100 miler towards Townsend.
No big deal just would like to know.
Besides being in 3 snowmobile clubs, I also belong to the Florence County ATV club as well as the Dun-Good club. However I don't have time to be active at all in those clubs. The way I see it is that ATVs are starting to out number snowmobiles, according to the registration reports, and they are going to want more and more trails open. The businesses see a potential for more $$$$, so they are happy to see ATVs all year
Bottom line is both groups need to work together to keep the trails we have open and to add more trails in the future. We need to concentrate our fight against the anti-motorized people instead of each other.
Very well stated, HOOTER, we need to stick together.
the anti spark plug crowd never sleeps.
and to top it off ,now some repubs...GWB....are buying into the whole Glow bal warming propoganda.
4 strokes / clean fire 2 strokes or not, these evil geniuses still have us in there scopes....think about how much of forest co. has the trail routes in the nat. forest...this is there next target...there hysteria, brought into your living rooms,by "THE L MEDIA" worked to get yellowstone closed....

One last point. I am also a groomer operator and I see first hand what happens on the trails. If ATVs ride on the groomed trails when the temperature is cold(mid 20's or less) they do little damage (unless they are trying to wreck the trail). If one ATV rides the trails when the temperature is at or above 28 degrees, they will leave ruts. Since most ATVs ride in a single file formation, these ruts get worse and worse as more ATVs use the trail. They(ATVs) are not going away and as a group(snowmobilers) we need to figure out how to educate them so we can ALL enjoy the trails at the right times!!
