[/quote]It seemed like I got worse too, due to all the slush/water I was pushing. I think the motor had to work much harder. I thought I was going to run out of gas at one point!

I just sold a pair of these earlier this fall (a 94 500, and a 96 600), partly for that reason. Yamaha's twins were somewhat notorious for being pretty thirsty. That being said, ambient conditions have a pretty significant effect as well. When the snow is frozen hard and you're not sliding around in mush, you'll likely notice quite a difference.
My pair of MXZ800s seemed to be pretty thirsty too, but some of that could be expected from a monster twin. I was appalled when doing maintenance last summer to find #520 jets in those carbs!
In fact I did run one of them out on the 100 Miler headed south toward Wabeno. Then I nearly wore out my dang shoulders (let alone my ticker) trying to get the thing started again- I'm tempted to look into electric start (IF I keep them).
MXZ583 (98) seems to do pretty good, and I've never made a good measurement of the 02 MXZ500- I would guess comparable to the 583.
