[QUOTE]VILAS COUNTY - For snowmobiler's, hearing the hum of an engine, is a beautiful thing.
"I enjoy it."
In Vilas County, snowmobile season starts today.
Dale May is the Vilas County Snowmobile Program Coordinator. He says, "I've seen about a dozen people today riding."
Mayo says snowmobilers have been waiting for this day.
He tells Newswatch 12, "The area clubs are busy all fall long, brushing trails doing the signs, making sure all the obstructions are out of the trail. After the deer season they do another quick run through the trail system and then the county does an independent inspection."
Now that the trails are open, local businesses say they're excited for the season to begin.
Greg Cook works at Track Side in Eagle River. He says, "Being a die hard snowmobiler myself, it's a great thing. But business in general in the Northwoods, you know we need it. It's been a little bit of a slow fall, and things are coming on now and we're hoping for a good weekend."
Cook adds, while they're hoping for a good turnout this weekend, the big push comes later.
He tells Newswatch 12, "Of course the Northwoods doesn't really see a big kick in snowmobile traffic until that Christmas, New Years week is really when we start picking up and getting busy."
But right now Cook and Mayo say even though it's early, it's good. »
Vilas County has around 1000 miles of snowmobile trails andtypically opens its trails around this time each year.
