What was the 1st sled you purchased?
1st sleds
My first sleds were two 1980 Yamaha air-cooled 440 exciters that we still have and are still used as spares. They have around 13,000 miles on each and other than an occasional track bearing replacment, still start and run great! They've had the devil pounded out of them over the years and we like to use 'em for back roading in the Nicolet because they're so lite you can get unstuck fast.
They've had a steady diet of regular gas and whatever 2-cycle oi is the cheapest. :p I've owned nothing but air-cooled because of the weight, cost and maintenance savings!
I first started trail riding with an 89 Phazer we call it the "Lazer Phazer". She is still in commission and starts with 1 or two pulls. Every once in a while I'll take it out on the trails. You may laugh, but it's still a fun sled to ride.
I have several relatives who still own and ride these as their main machines. Among them, an '84, an '86 with over 20k miles on the clock (was and continues to be disconnected), and two '89s. On a good hard-packed trail- they still ride just as well as anything else does and excel at keeping wind off your torso and your right foot toasty warm. No doubt part of their longevity is the lack of all the extra hardware necessary for liquid cooling, and the fact that they don't spin a bajillion RPM at regular trail speeds.
