melting plastic

Post by Red Baron »

Yeah, i think it will melt your slides. Better stay home and be safe. Nobody is riding the 100 miler this weekend because of this very serious issue. Hyfax abuse is a crime. I, of couse will intall new slides every weekend if I can ride smooth icy trails, but the rest of you better stay home until this condition subsides. I will let you know when it's over, but I expect it to last until march.

We were up last weekend and there was snow on the grade. Don't go south of Lakewood however. Just don't stay on for real long. Lots of fun to be had on the side trails. The new part of the grade from Laona north had a lot of snow on it.:p We met one of the groomer drivers at the Wild Rose bar, he was going to put on chains on the tractor. Who was that driver? Have not seen anyone but Johnne. We stopped in there as well. we will be up again in 2 weeks. I hope you get more snow by then. Ride safe.
The trails in Wabeno look good, but is there enough lose snow for the hyfax or will we burn em up at medium speeds 60 or so:shrug:
The trails are all hard packed with no loose snow. You'll have to jump off to the side of the trail in any attempt to pick up loose snow for either lubrication or cooling. Crazy that on a day like today with negative temps, to think you'd have a problem with overheating. But that's exactly what happens with no loose snow. You just have to make sure you try to hit some now and again to keep things cool. However, the snow off the trail is becoming hard packed and crusted as well. I had an overnight low of -11.

Medium trails speeds

Post by g hug »

just curious..... a medium trail speed of 60 MPH:confused: You can lead. I will make sure I am behind you.

By the way the 100 miler trails are some of the best groomed trails in the state...bar none. Nice job:thumbup:

I missed that medium speed comment. But that can only be on the grade. You may be able to reach and exceed that speed on parts of the trails through the woods, but you'll never maintain it. Unless, of course you ride fast enough. It's like that saying about cars. It'll last you a lifetime if you drive it fast enough. Same with the sled. Average speed for me through the woods is around 30-40 MPH. And remember, please try to slow down when you reach the town roads (snow routes), because we're having some problems with that.

trail speeds

Post by ArticMike »

You're right Jim, If you go fast enough your sled will last a lifetime. I have been riding for about 35 years so at this point in my life a was refering to a steady speed on the grade. I read your frustrations and I feel the same about many things in life and all it takes is a thanks once in awhile soooooo

THANKS for the excellent trail reports & pics and all the behind the scenes work you do.
all it takes is a thanks once in awhile
You are absolutely correct about that. And that's the very reason I make sure I groom the trail spur into Fence EVERY TIME I go out. Whether it really needs it or not. A couple of years ago while I was Gudowicz's fueling up, a group of sleds pulled in. One of the guys in the group came up and asked me who groomed that Fence Spur. I said I did. He said that was the best trail he ever rode and thanked me. He also asked me if I taught groomer school. And he's the reason I groom that every time. That spur doesn't get a lot of traffic early in the week, sometimes you could probably get away with not grooming it... but not me. I make sure that I have that section in the best condition possible, just in case the fellow happens to be coming along.
