I am still reading posts, but I have not received any word from Johnnie or Roger officially. Officially the word from Dick on Armstrong Creek is that our trails are still closed.

don't push it

I am an avid rider that can't wait until the trails open. I also understand the impacts on opening too soon. If there isn't enough snow, leave the gates closed!! Establishing the right base is crucial to the trail. A few idiots out grinding the delicate base into the dirt will ruin the trail for the whole year if we have continued marginal conditions. Not only that, landowners don't like seeing a snirty trail. It's a tough decision, but good things come to people who wait. I would like to challenge all the REAL snowmobilers to do what is right, and don't push the issue until there's both safe and ridable trail conditions. You can go pound 4" into the dirt, or wait until there's enough there to do something productive with. It's your slides and your carbides, but it's everyone's trail, and it's a priviledge, not a right to ride on them.

I dont plan on riding the trails this weekend even if they do open. A bunch of us are heading to watersmeet Mi to get our fix. Once Forest County gets a good base then all be out. This is the 1st yr that ive actually trailered any sled outta my yard in Armstrong. I had to borrow a trailer in order to do this trip.

I say let the good base come.

Trail Opening Update

Post by Jim »

I just got word that Johnnie was out voted today at the meeting in Crandon as far as the trail opening. I think Johnnie was thinking like us here in Armstrong Creek. There JUST isn't ENOUGH snow to open the trails right now. But the "official" word from the county is that the trails are supposed to open Wednesday morning. But nobody called us to see what our trail conditions are like up here in Armstrong Creek. I'll be posting some pictures later this evening from the short run Dick and I made today, and you can judge for yourself. We've still got that "widow maker" on the trail to the north of Armstrong Creek, and that will NOT open until that gets taken care of. There is also some signing and brushing that needs to be done.

Im sure most of us will keep off waiting for a good base, but some of them crazy sledheads might just jump on the fact of open trails closer then driving to MI.

Sure stinks when the guys who know how to keep the trails lasting long get out voted. One thing is that if they get beat down this weekend and look like crap then the riders will start going else where. That will take any bussiness they thought they would have to Mi or other areas. Also then it will make more work for eveyone to get the trails back in shape.

agreed!

I totally agree with the fact that there isnt enough snow out there but there is two arguments to make and that is that it is getting later and later in the year the longer we wait and small business . Also there isnt much snow and you will just be doing damage but everyone has there own opinion.

As previously mentioned... there is at least one tree to the north that MUST come down before that trail is opened. I know the county is hankering to get this season going to help the local businesses... but do you really think it's going to help by opening the trails only to upset someone over our poor trail conditions, so that they might never come back? Granted there may be one or two 'OK' or even 'good' spots, but from what we saw up here in Armstrong Creek while grooming today, overall conditions are poor. And that's not an opinion, that's a fact!
