This is only my fourth year sledding, but I was thinking this may be the latest start for me yet. Seems to me, if memory serves me right (which it doesn't always), the previous three years we were sleding by December. But Dick (aka the Trail Master) told me back in November, that he thought it would be after the first of the year before we'd be out grooming. And that was before and after we had that early storm in November that dumped 8" on us. And so far it's looking like he's right on the money. How did he know that? I guess that's why they call him the Trail Master. He's been around long enough and doing it for so long, that's he's in tune with Mother Nature.

A buddy just called me from Hurley, and he said that's it's snowing up there now, and the roads are getting snow coved. He said the trails are open and he's seen 15-20 sleds in town. He says 3"-4" on the road. But he says he's not for certain. He's only guessing from his point of view, from the cab of his 18 wheeler as he goes down the road.

It just started snowing here a few minutes ago. :) It's coming down pretty good with some nice big flakes. I would like to see it do this all weekend, and we'll be set. Keep your fingers crossed. And maybe, just maybe, we'll get what we need.

past year starts (snowing)

Post by fusion_117 »

We have been sledin for as long as i can remeber up here and it seems like every year the trails open either on or around the first if the year always i dont remeber the trails opening in december hardly but i think even when it did it turned to crap right away . Man it is getting boreing around here the lakes are even rough. think snow and maybe we could get some and start sledding all it takes is one good snow storm and we are in business up here in forest county we got the best trails because we have patience and thats why onieda countys trails will be ruined by the time we open are's .

I was talking with another fellow and he said the same thing. He said a couple of years ago he thinks it January before we started to sled. Or maybe thats when the trails usually open. Maybe I'm thinking about the all the trail brushing we did. But I thought the trails opened in December last year. But I'm not sure. Maybe Johnnie or Roger have that information some where. I know they keep track of the number of weeks of sledding each year. And last year was a very good year... How many weeks was that Johnnie? Was that 14 weeks last year? Dick told me that the average is 10 weeks.

That moderate snow fall that we had about an hour and half ago, has died down to light flurries. :( Hopefully it will pick back up.

I'm hoping that next band on the radar to the west makes it up here.

I went out last year the 2 days before christmas. we had a decent snow storm or at least it was enough to put two oconto county plow trucks in the ditch. that was the earliest i have been out lately.
