Jim I got out tonight and did some more putting around the trails in town and the ditch line. Picked up some brush and tossed it outta the way, even found a few rocks. To bad the rocks are frozen but a lil more snow will cover them up nice. Just gotta watch them puppies, they catch the carbides really good.

I noticed a few more tracks out besides mine, I tend to stay over by the ditches and then close to Goodies for gas. Nothing down the trail to much besides where I know I can ride with out causing trouble.

Sorry I didn't wave to you a few days ago, I didn't notice you right away in that big SUV. However if it was a sled I would have kown right away lol!

I talked to Dick yesterday, and he said the latest we've ever opened the trails, was the second week of January. And that's where we're at today. We need some snow.

Does he maintain yearly statistics or is he simply going by memory? I for one would be pretty interested in seeing a post with facts and figures from the past. Something like what date the trails were officially opened & closed, when grooming started & stopped, etc. This is certainly an oddball year- let's hope it doesn't become a trend.

I would like to lodge a formal complaint about the weather. Where is the complaint box?

trail open dates

Post by Red Baron »

I can only speak to the last 3 winters prior to this year. In '03 I rode on 12-20, in '04 I rode on 12-27, in '05 I rode on 12-26. Total odometer mileage for the last three years was 6500 miles on my sled, 90% of which was in Forest Co. 100 miler Trails may have been open prior to this by a little bit, but there was always a meltdown between X-mas and new years, and riding was marginal. If I remeber correctly, last year had 14 weekends where the trails were open, and the previous years were similar with great riding, especially well into in March, the best month to ride in my opinion. Relax, it's still early. My hope is that it snows in the UP 1st to keep the traffic down to manageable levels in Forest County, or you will see everyone in a tri-state area converge and run the trails down to mud in 1 weekend! We have lots of winter left yet. Go up and make a run to your favorite stops with your car and a designated driver, it's almost as fun and much warmer. Your patronage will keep them in business till the white gold flies.

Let it snow.. and support those who need it.

We plan to be up north to Laona in a few weeks supporting the local economy -bars/motels/gas stations/etc- no matter what the weather.
This coming weekend is our local (West Bend, WI) snowmobile club ice fisheree. Considering this is our big fund raiser for the year and we have NO ice or snow... it may not generate as much money as we have in the past. Support the club events and support those who are hurting due to this warm weather. And think snow... Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow...

Plan on coming up as well next weekend no matter the weather. Hopefully will have some snow. Talking about a cool down starting next week. Of course no trip is complete without stopping by Johnnies.
